The CILT Golf Society

Paul W Symes, CBE FCILT writes, “In the margins of Council Meetings of the Institute of Distribution Management (ILDM), several of us had discussed the merits of forming an Institute Golf Society. My retirement from the Army in 1994 prompted me to grasp that nettle and get on with it – I produced a Golf Society Constitution & Rules and booked our first Spring Meeting and AGM at Denham Golf Club for 1995. The inaugural committee consisted of John Smith, who became the first Golf Society Captain, Trafford Davies the Vice Captain, Chris Sturman took on the role of Treasurer, John Croucher sought sponsors and I became Chairman. We booked prestigious venues for the Summer and Autumn Meetings at the Forest of Arden and Northampton respectively and began recruiting.

The attraction of our declared aim “to provide golfing members of the Institute with the opportunity to foster professional, business and sporting contacts” quickly drew in a number of senior like-minded figures. Our Membership List read like a ‘who’s who’ for the industry, and still does, and our meetings offer an excellent opportunity for Institute members and past members to play golf and network together. Several of our members have joined the Institute in order to join the Golf Society and that link with the Institute has remained strong, taking us through the mergers which led to the formation of the CILT(UK) in 1999. Sponsors also appreciate the opportunity to publicise their business both to members and through Logistics & Transport Focus and, by supporting our meetings, help us to offer attractive member discounts.

In the years since our formation we’ve lost two of our founders, Trafford Davies and John Swanson-Smith, but they are with us ‘in spirit’ and would be pleased to see the rest of us upholding the traditional aims of the Golf Society. So, come and join us?
