What a year!! As many of you will have experienced, golf clubs are finding ways to safely welcome back golf societies, albeit with some differences from normal. It means that we hope to be able stage events again, while recognising that local restrictions may result in late changes or cancellations. Our modified programme is as follows:
22 Jul 20 Match v Liberals GS West Essex GC (team of 6)
19 Aug 20 Late Spring Meeting Hankley Common GC
26 Aug 20 (possible) Match v RLC GS Army GC, Aldershot (team of 8)
6-8 Sep 20 GS Tour to Yorkshire Fulford, York (Strensall), Ganton GCs
22 Sep 20 Match v Oil Industry GS Denham GC (team of 8)
14 Oct 20 GS Autumn Meeting Northamptonshire County GC
Our rearranged Late Spring Meeting will be held on Wednesday 19 August 2020 at our favourite venue Hankley Common Golf Club. This beautiful high-quality heathland course near Farnham, Surrey, which originated in 1897, is used as an Open Regional Qualifying Course and was voted number 41 in the Golf Monthly Top 100 courses and 46 in the Golf World Top 100 list (see www.hankley.co.uk for more details).
Covid 19 restrictions may affect our use of changing rooms and catering but these are being eased and final joining instructions will make clear what we can expect. Our expectation is that the Clubhouse will be open from 0730 and, from 0800, coffee and a bacon roll will be available. Play will start at 0900 with an 18-hole Handicap Stableford (off full handicap) played in three’s, using both the 1st and 10th yellow tees. This popular meeting provides an excellent opportunity to bring a guest but please bid early to avoid disappointment. Obviously, non-members will not be able to compete for the Golf Society Spring Meeting Trophy but prizes will be awarded for the Winning Guest, Longest Drive and Nearest the Pin competitions. The competition will be followed by a lunch and prize-giving. Those wishing to, may also play another 9 holes of golf for an extra charge.
Our main sponsor for this Late Spring Meeting is Narrow Aisle (thanks once again to John Maguire). The generosity of our sponsor and backing from Golf Society funds has enabled us to reduce the cost of the package from £140 to £60 for entitled GS members, including bacon roll on arrival, 18 holes of quality golf, post-match catering, wine and competition prizes. Non-entitled members of the Society and guests are required to pay a partly subsidised price of £80 per person. An additional charge of £10 will be required from those wishing to play a further 9-holes of golf. Our Late Spring Meeting organiser is Peter Wood. Please return your Late Spring Meeting Entry Form (Annex C) to Peter by 9 Aug 2020 either with a cheque or online with a BACS payment – his address is as shown on the Entry Form or he can be contacted: e-mail: email@example.com or Telephone: 01264-351982. Peter will send out a note to those returning the attached Entry Form giving timings and directions to Hankley Common Golf Club etc. We need to confirm numbers to the Golf Club by 14 Aug so no refunds can be made to those cancelling after that date. Late bids should be copied to me or, for contact on the day, ring me on 07710 230972.
As a Golf Society we always try to respect the rules of our host club. Please note that on this golf course it is permitted to wear tailored shorts with either single-colour knee-length socks or short white sport socks which must cover the ankle. Also note that pull and electric trolleys are to be kept out of the heather and mobile phones are absolutely forbidden on the golf course and in the Clubhouse. A jacket and tie will be required in the Club Dining Room for lunch and prize-giving.
