While fully recognising the hardship and suffering experienced by many during the current pandemic, it was a joy to finally get the CILT Golf Society’s season underway with a match against the National Liberal Golf Circle at West Essex GC on Wednesday 22nd July. This fixture has reached its fourth year and the CILT GS was looking to even up the win/loss statistics.
The match was hosted by this year’s Liberal GC Captain, Phil Reeves, at his home club and restricted to 6-a-side (instead of the usual 8) to ensure we met existing virus control protocols. Suffice to say that those who were lucky enough to attend the event thoroughly enjoyed the experience despite the abnormal circumstances.
The course was in good condition considering the lack of rain and the greens were both difficult to read and lightning fast. Weather conditions were ideal for golf: dry with pleasant temperatures and light winds. All participants also appreciated the excellent and plentiful pre- and post-round catering provided by the club.
Now to the match report. 2020 CILT GS Captain, Bob Harper paired himself with Adrian Malupa to play the ‘dream team’ consisting of his opposite number and Paul Beever – and suffered the consequences! However, the pairings of John Winter with Lee Armstrong and Peter Taylor with Jeff Warnock managed to get the best of their opponents to result in a tied total of 116 points each. Match drawn.
Let’s hope the rest of this truncated season goes as well and roll on 2021 when CILT GS will be the hosts for this match.
