Tour to Yorkshire – 6th to 8th September 2020
In September 2001 Golf Society Member, John Winter, was inspired to organise a 3-day tour to North-West France. Thanks to an unfailing mix of camaraderie, quality accommodation, excellent cuisine and quality golf courses (including Open Championship venues), annual overseas and UK tours have been well supported by the membership ever since.
Our Golf Society annual tour this year takes us to Yorkshire, staying in the York Hilton in the centre of York and playing the famous top rated courses at Fulford, York (Strensall) and Ganton Golf Clubs. On Days 1 and 2, we will be playing an 18 hole individual and team stableford competition.
This year will be playing on our first day Fulford that has a long pedigree of hosting International Championship Golf Events. On Day two, we tackle York (Strensall). York is a a hidden gem and is a delightful course to play and I am know will be enjoyed by all of us. Ganton is unique and has joined Royal Birkdale, The Honourable Company of Edinburgh Golfers and Royal Lytham & St Annes as being the only clubs to have staged The Curtis Cup, The Walker Cup and The Ryder Cup.
The Hilton York hotel, located opposite the iconic Clifford’s Tower, is within easy walking distance of popular attractions such as Jorvik Viking Centre and York Minster. For shopping, many popular high street retailers are a short walk away, amongst lively bars and eateries. The accommodation is contemporary and use of the 24-hour fitness room is included. Car Parking is available at the hotel but will need to pre booked directly with the hotel. There is an abundance of Car parking available outside the hotel.
Housed in the former house of Georgian architect G.T Andrews, it dates back to around 1825/26. It is probably the earliest surviving purpose built architects office. It is a Grade II listed building, and also an English Heritage Monument. It has impressive period features and décor throughout, chiefly the original fireplaces in the main Dining room and bar area. It also sits in the shadow of the ever impressive, Clifford’s Tower, one of York’s major landmarks and within walking distance of our hotel.
