Gus and Liz raise over £2000 for Institute of Cancer Research

By |2021-11-29T11:28:49+00:00November 29th, 2021|Uncategorized|

After a two years absence due to COVID restrictions, Gus Whyte Sales Director at Hoppecke Industrial Batteries (UK) Ltd, once again dug out his kilt and along with 90 others tackled a number of hills in the lake district raising well needed money for the Institute of Cancer Research (ICR). On a wet and windy day (which is very relevant when wearing a kilt) and on the 5th November the climbs took place around the Coniston area in the Like District National Park. The success of the day was recognised with thanks from the ICR where with generous [...]

CILT Golf Society – Autumn Meeting and Season Round-Up

By |2021-11-02T08:47:09+00:00November 2nd, 2021|Uncategorized|

After a comparatively normal golfing year, the CILT Golf Society held its season-ending Autumn Meeting on 13th October at the very welcoming Northamptonshire County Golf Club. Unseasonably mild late-season weather continued to favour us so 21 members and 4 guests tackled this gem of a Harry S Colt course with eager anticipation. With the course rewarded those players who were able to keep the ball out of trouble off the tee and master the true, but tricky, greens, early optimism dissipated sooner for some than others! As has been the case since we first visited Northamptonshire County in 2014, [...]

Shooting your age! Alan Swindley shoots gross 76 at 79!

By |2021-09-22T14:54:34+01:00July 29th, 2021|Uncategorized|

One of the benefits of being ‘tour organiser’ is the opportunity to go out and play the courses before the tour itself to become better acquainted with the venue and its facilities. Kindly invited for a friendly three ball by Kirkbymoorside member Gus Whyte, who is a local representative for the PGA (Pickering Golf Association if you must know) along with Ganton member Alan Swindley, we played the course on a hot July day from the yellow tees. Alan was breathless when he arrived, rushing up the hill from the car park with five minutes to spare. He told [...]

Beaconsfield – 13th April 2021 – Cancelled

By |2021-07-04T11:15:00+01:00February 27th, 2021|Uncategorized|

"Further to the Government’s announcement this week, regrettably, the Club has taken the decision to cancel all Society bookings up until 17th May 2021" This was probably expected but, obviously, I’m sorry that we will not be able to hold our golf meeting at Beaconsfield on 13 Apr 21. Our programme for the latter half of the year is quite congested so regrettably we will have to miss this meeting but plans are already underway to rebook for 2022. We spoke to Peter Taylor, the current holder of the Chairman's Cup who said, "If I look on the bright side,  [...]

Looking back to 2014 – The Belgium Golf Tour

By |2021-01-13T18:16:46+00:00January 13th, 2021|Uncategorized|

Having spent the previous 4 years touring Scotland and Jersey we decided to go back across the English Channel to Belgium for the 2014 Tour. We had been put off travelling overseas by a crippling exchange rate that saw us purchasing bottles of Peroni lager for £9 and Gin & T’s for about twice that figure. But the exchange rate was beginning to move back in our favour and golf clubs and hotels were keen to get The British back playing golf again. Instead of going back to France we thought we would explore new horizons and see what [...]

Tour to Yorkshire – Sunday 5th to Tuesday 7th September 2021

By |2021-01-18T13:06:06+00:00January 13th, 2021|Uncategorized|

By September this year I think we are all expecting that the wider world will have returned to some sort of normality and we have based our plans this year with that expectation. On the first day, we will play Moortown Golf Club, Leeds; home of the 1929 Ryder Cup. We then travel across the A64 to the York Hilton; our home in the centre of York, for the next two nights. On Day 2, we head north to tackle Kirkbymoorside; the home course of Gus Whyte. Ganton has seen a number of improvements since we were last there, [...]

Chairman’s Review of the Year 2020

By |2021-01-19T11:27:36+00:00January 13th, 2021|Uncategorized|

Compared to many others, I think we did well to be able to hold some events during a year dominated by coronavirus.  The number of attendees demonstrated an eagerness to get back to playing golf and to meeting our GS chums!  We also gained some new members, including some who’d been regular guests, so we extend a warm welcome to them all.  The few names who dominate the list of winners disguises the fact that many others turned in good scores in testing conditions. Future Plans.  At a Committee Meeting in November, we discussed all aspects and will [...]
