Over the past few weeks members of our Golf Society have been busy doing battle with various other groups. The results of their endeavours are shown below. Triangular match versus The Royal Logistics Corps GS and Transport GS While the world of logistics is facing many challenges - notably from the global pandemic and the aftermath of Brexit - it is comforting to know that golf can provide a little respite. Our match v the Royal Logistic Corps Golf Society has been played annually since 1996, initially at the RAC Club, [...]

Another Amazing Tour

By |2021-09-22T14:53:41+01:00September 21st, 2021|Uncategorized|

Whatever the location and regardless of the weather, John Winter always organises a thoroughly enjoyable tour! This year’s three day return trip to Yorkshire proved to be no exception. The tour party of 26 members and six guests, met at Moortown Golf Club – venue for the 1929 Ryder Cup - on Sunday 5th September. Having recently hosted the English Amateur Championship, the course was in tip-top, if somewhat tough, condition. Nevertheless, several players stepped up to the task and managed to play to, or better than, their handicaps.  Among performances of note was that [...]

A Close Match!

By |2021-09-23T18:25:04+01:00August 8th, 2021|Uncategorized|

Hoping to improve upon last year’s tied match, the CILT Golf Society took on the National Liberal Club Golf Circle at Aldwickbury Park Golf Club near Harpenden on Thursday 29th July. The Liberal GC included two ladies in their team for the first time. This was a welcome development in an always enjoyable sporting and social event. Unfortunately only 7 of the selected 8 CILT GS team members were able to attend, so Eddie Cox ended up with the tough task of taking on a Liberal GC pair on his own – in a 4-ball, better ball, Stableford competition! [...]

Summer Meeting – Copt Heath GC

By |2021-07-14T13:27:18+01:00July 10th, 2021|Uncategorized|

Despite the ongoing pandemic restrictions, 24 members and 4 guests enjoyed a great day at Copt Heath Golf Club near Solihull on Thursday 24th June. As usual for this (our 6th) visit to the home of Peter McEvoy, the course was in terrific condition and provided an excellent test of golfing ability. After consuming the traditional pre-round fare of coffee/tea and bacon rolls, the assembled golfers headed out to the course - many via the practice area. As it turned out, this was probably a wise move! Whatever the case, those who brought along (or [...]

Off and running at Hankley Common

By |2021-06-11T17:35:26+01:00May 25th, 2021|Strategy|

After the trials and tribulations of last year, it was a delight to hold the 2021 Spring Meeting at its spiritual home of Hankley Common Golf Club, and in the traditional month of May. The Covid restrictions have provided a real challenge to the ability of golf clubs to respond to the backlog of demand from members and visiting societies and one consequence was that we were limited to a field of 28 players for this event.  At the same time, enthusiasm from members to get back together meant that bids to enter exceeded that number so we had [...]

CILT GOLF SOCIETY HANDICAPS

By |2021-04-19T15:02:55+01:00March 31st, 2021|Uncategorized|

At the AGM on 11th March 2021, it was agreed that the CILT Golf Society should align itself as closely as possible with the new World Handicapping System (WHS) for the purposes of competition. The following article attempts to explain the WHS and its impact on society members and those who participate in our events. Background Our original rule on Handicaps was deliberately introduced to allow CILT golfers (who are not members of affiliated golf clubs) to participate in our events. GS members (who are members of affiliated clubs) and have scored 36 or more points in one of [...]

Welcome to a new season

By |2021-02-12T18:00:16+00:00February 12th, 2021|Uncategorized|

Welcome to the 2021 golfing season! As at the time of writing, much of the UK is under a covering of snow and Covid-19 lockdown is still in force. However, with the days getting longer and warmer and anti-virus measures (seemingly) starting to take effect, we can start to make plans for a year that will probably be a bit different from 'normal' but hopefully better than 2020. The season has now been officially launched by a missive from our Chairman, Paul W Symes CBE (Members Mtg21c ). In this document you can find further details about our first [...]

Autumn Meeting and Season Round-Up

By |2020-10-22T12:37:02+01:00October 22nd, 2020|Uncategorized|

To complete a strange and truncated year the CILT Golf Society held its season-ending Autumn Meeting on 14th October at the excellent Northamptonshire County Golf Club. The weather was very kind to us and 27 members and guests turned out to tackle the challenges presented by this gem of a Harry S Colt course. As usual, some found the going more difficult than others on a course that favoured long, straight tee shots and good skills on and around the greens. Members and guests were served a terrific three-course meal as they came in after their round, followed by [...]

Another Successful Tour

By |2020-09-22T12:38:45+01:00September 22nd, 2020|Uncategorized|

Thanks to the sterling efforts of chief organiser John Winter, local residents Gus Whyte and Alan Swindley, Society Captain, Bob Harper and assistant/score-keeper Cameron Grant, plus the accommodating attitude of the Hilton Hotel, the 31 Castlegate restaurant and the 3 golf clubs named below, the CILT Golf Society was able to enjoy yet another splendid autumn tour. This year John proposed a visit to Yorkshire to play Fulford GC, York (Strensall) GC and Ganton GC. In view of the proven quality of all these courses the membership was fully supportive of John’s choice and proved it by turning up [...]

Soggy Late Spring Meeting

By |2020-08-27T17:38:09+01:00August 27th, 2020|Uncategorized|

Coronavirus restrictions caused the postponement of earlier Golf Society events so this favourite venue and the prospect of reuniting with chums attracted lots of interest. Those facing longer journeys from Yorkshire and Norfolk hesitated when they saw the forecasts of torrential rain but 24 members and guests gathered under tented awnings and umbrellas to take on this challenging course. Inevitable comparisons were drawn with similar wet days at previous Society events at Le Touquet, Wimereux, Royal Troon, Prestwick and even worse at Western Gailes – but that goes with our 26 year history!  Traditionally [...]
