Motor Trades GS Match

May 31st, 2022|

We added an extra event to our schedule for the season – a match between teams of 8 against the Motor Trades Golf Society.  This first/inaugural match was arranged by Paul Healy of the MT GS at Surbiton Golf Club on Mon 23 May 2022. As this was a late addition to our list of events, many of those who wanted to play had other commitments, with the regrettable result that we could only field a team of 6.  Nevertheless, we all met up for a snack lunch and then played a 4BBB match.  The first pairing of Paul Symes and Mark Smith lost 2:3, the second pair of Paul Beever and Eddie Cox drew, and the final pair of Alan Butterworth and David Wilson won 2:1 – so the match was halved. MT GS produced a trophy for this match – so retain it until next year. We were pleasantly surprised by the tranquillity of this lovely setting within the M25 ring and with the quality of the course.  We also enjoyed the glorious weather, a great meal and the opportunity to [...]

When it’s Spring again……..

May 31st, 2022|

As evidenced by the main picture, Hankley Common GC was in its usual superb condition for our annual Spring Meeting. When the Spring Meeting moved to Hankley Common GC from its original home at Denham GC in 2008, we were indebted to Flexi-Narrow Aisle, through member John Maguire, for their sponsorship. The fact that Flexi-Narrow Aisle have continued to support this event over the years is evidence of the benefits such exposure to, and networking with,  senior figures in the logistics industry can bring. This year, relaxation of two years of pandemic-enforced restrictions made the day all the more enjoyable for the 20 members and 5 guests who graced the fairways – and the heather – of this gem of a course, on a dry but overcast and breezy day. After the morning golf, members and guests were treated to an excellent 3-course meal, followed by coffee and presentation of the competition prizes in the club lounge. In recognition of the fact that a large majority of the participants are no longer competitive in [...]

Member’s Meeting – Success at Last!

May 2nd, 2022|

With high hopes for a successful new season, 22 members – including a welcome newcomer, Garrett Emmerson – arrived at Beaconsfield Golf Club on Tuesday 12th April to kick off our 2022 golfing year. Prior to the golf, and for the first time in 2 years, we were able to hold a proper AGM without having to resort to video conferencing. Mandatory officers were voted into post, reports delivered on the society activities for 2021 and events were confirmed for 2022. There was then much discussion on the society's programme for 2023 and beyond in the light of significantly increased event costs as clubs react to increased demand. The period of wet and cold weather experienced earlier in the year had given way to dry, cloudy conditions on the day, with temperatures in the mid-teens. Unfortunately, preparation of this normally immaculate golf course had been hampered by the adverse conditions and it was generally agreed that the greens in particular were not up to the club’s usual standard - even the normal practice putting green was out of [...]

Join the Golf Forum at this year’s new season Members Meeting

January 19th, 2022|

Even though you may have already broken some of your New Year’s resolutions, here’s hoping that, like me, you are determined to enjoy your golf in 2022. If so, there is no better way to get started than joining us at Beaconsfield Golf Club on Tuesday 12th April for our season-opening Member’s Meeting, playing for the Chairman’s Cup. Beaconsfield is a beautifully presented, classic Harry Colt designed course with excellent practice facilities – particularly the Luke Donald short game area! The course remains basically the same as when it was originally designed in 1913 by HS "Harry" Colt and has many of his trademark features. In particular it is very well bunkered and has unusually large greens. Each of the holes has its own character and is separated from its neighbouring holes by mature mixed woodland. Apart from the 6th and 8th hole it offers very easy walking, though a few single seat buggies are available for hire. In 2020 and 2021 Covid-related restrictions led to the cancellation of this meeting, but it is traditional at this season-opener for the Golf Society AGM [...]

Chairman’s Review of the Year 2021

January 5th, 2022|

Report for 2021.  Apart from our Members’ Meeting, the easing of Covid restrictions enabled us to enjoy a full season of events and attendance levels improved.  We gained some new members so I extend a warm welcome to them all.  One feature this year was the introduction of the World Handicap System (WHS) which, in time, should provide a ‘playing handicap’ which more accurately reflects a golfer’s playing ability and the difficulty of the course being played.  Click the link for a summary of the results of events in 2021 ChairmanReport21AnnexA. General.  A Committee Meeting in November discussed all aspects; full reports will be given to the AGM covering: GS Finances.  Rising prices, higher attendance numbers and our policy to subsidise events from GS funds resulted in a deficit of over £2,000 in 2021.  With the need to keep reserves to cover cash-flow (deposits, delayed sponsor payments), the committee recommended increasing annual subscriptions, event fees for members (with more for guests) and to seek more sponsors.  Committee Appointments. To support our 2022 Captain, Brian Reid, the committee recommended Ian Chalmers to be Vice [...]

Gus and Liz raise over £2000 for Institute of Cancer Research

November 29th, 2021|

After a two years absence due to COVID restrictions, Gus Whyte Sales Director at Hoppecke Industrial Batteries (UK) Ltd, once again dug out his kilt and along with 90 others tackled a number of hills in the lake district raising well needed money for the Institute of Cancer Research (ICR). On a wet and windy day (which is very relevant when wearing a kilt) and on the 5th November the climbs took place around the Coniston area in the Like District National Park. The success of the day was recognised with thanks from the ICR where with generous sponsorship support from members of The CILT Golf Society and from guests at their regular golfing events, colleagues from the UK Materials Handling Industry and personal friends Gus was awarded the Climb of Life medal for the highest value donation collected by an individual. Gus and his wife Liz collected over £2,000.00 and as a group the sponsorship, raffle and charity auction raised over £75,000.00. A valued contribution by the ICR. Gus would like to thank everyone that supported him with this event to [...]
