Looking back to 2014 – The Belgium Golf Tour

January 13th, 2021|

Having spent the previous 4 years touring Scotland and Jersey we decided to go back across the English Channel to Belgium for the 2014 Tour. We had been put off travelling overseas by a crippling exchange rate that saw us purchasing bottles of Peroni lager for £9 and Gin & T’s for about twice that figure. But the exchange rate was beginning to move back in our favour and golf clubs and hotels were keen to get The British back playing golf again. Instead of going back to France we thought we would explore new horizons and see what Belgium had to offer. Belgium truly is a fabulous golfing destination. It has many traditional parkland and links golf courses that are reasonably priced and seemed to have escaped the focus of overseas tour groups. The boutique hotel in Ghent was an inspired if not a lucky choice. Situated within a short walk of the centre of the city, it had recently been refurbished to a high specification and had just reopened. Their groups team were looking for groups just like us to help [...]

Tour to Yorkshire – Sunday 5th to Tuesday 7th September 2021

January 13th, 2021|

By September this year I think we are all expecting that the wider world will have returned to some sort of normality and we have based our plans this year with that expectation. On the first day, we will play Moortown Golf Club, Leeds; home of the 1929 Ryder Cup. We then travel across the A64 to the York Hilton; our home in the centre of York, for the next two nights. On Day 2, we head north to tackle Kirkbymoorside; the home course of Gus Whyte. Ganton has seen a number of improvements since we were last there, as it prepares for the Brabazon Trophy, and awaits us on Day 3. We will return to 31 Castlegate for Monday night’s dinner.  Offer Our headline price for 2 members sharing a twin room reflects the quality of golf courses that we will be playing at a subsidised member’s rate of £345 that includes all golf, bed and breakfast accommodation for 2 x nights with dinner on the Monday night and a sandwich lunch at Ganton Golf Club. Rooms have been provisionally reserved for [...]

Chairman’s Review of the Year 2020

January 13th, 2021|

Compared to many others, I think we did well to be able to hold some events during a year dominated by coronavirus.  The number of attendees demonstrated an eagerness to get back to playing golf and to meeting our GS chums!  We also gained some new members, including some who’d been regular guests, so we extend a warm welcome to them all.  The few names who dominate the list of winners disguises the fact that many others turned in good scores in testing conditions. Future Plans.  At a Committee Meeting in November, we discussed all aspects and will provide full reports to the AGM. a. Committee Appointments.  Recognising the shortened season for 2020, Bob Harper was invited to remain as Captain for 2021 – but he needs the support of a Vice Captain for 2021/Captain(designate) for 2022.  The committee approached several nominees and have a recommendation.  Chris Sturman expressed a wish to hand over his role as Treasurer before the end of 2021 and Peter Taylor offered to take this on.  Other committee members indicated a willingness to stay.  These proposals will [...]

Autumn Meeting and Season Round-Up

October 22nd, 2020|

To complete a strange and truncated year the CILT Golf Society held its season-ending Autumn Meeting on 14th October at the excellent Northamptonshire County Golf Club. The weather was very kind to us and 27 members and guests turned out to tackle the challenges presented by this gem of a Harry S Colt course. As usual, some found the going more difficult than others on a course that favoured long, straight tee shots and good skills on and around the greens. Members and guests were served a terrific three-course meal as they came in after their round, followed by prize-giving for the day and as appropriate for the shortened season. In the absence of self-isolating 2020 Golf Society Captain, Bob Harper, Immediate Past Captain, Cameron Grant, announced the day’s winners who collected their prizes from a suitably arranged table. The Guest Prize was won on countback by Malcolm Mitchell (33pts) from James Surridge (playing off +1). Continuing his late season form (having won the September Tour Prize), and also on countback having scored 22 points on the back [...]

Wednesday 14 October 2020 at Northamptonshire County Golf Club

September 27th, 2020|

Our Autumn Meeting is scheduled for Wednesday 14 October 2020 at Northamptonshire County Golf Club, Golf Lane, Church Brampton, NN6 8AZ which is 4m NW of Northampton.  This Harry S Colt course opened in 1910 is a traditional inland golf course with undulating woodland, gorse, heather and fine pine woods.  It is ranked as one of the Top 100 Golf Courses, has been the venue for the prestigious PGA Seniors Pro Championship and is regularly used as a Regional Qualifying Course for the Open Championship.  For further details see  www.countygolfclub.org.uk Ensuring that we comply with Covid-90 restrictions, keep safe and are not responsible for spreading this virus is paramount.  This means complying with local travel and lock-down restrictions, track and trace requirements and not attending if you have any symptoms.  These restrictions may change or tighten up before the meeting but, currently, the meeting is open to all Golf Society members and their guests and the format for this meeting has been modified in order to meet the restriction of “gatherings of 6”.  This means limiting our numbers to a maximum of 30, [...]

Another Successful Tour

September 22nd, 2020|

Thanks to the sterling efforts of chief organiser John Winter, local residents Gus Whyte and Alan Swindley, Society Captain, Bob Harper and assistant/score-keeper Cameron Grant, plus the accommodating attitude of the Hilton Hotel, the 31 Castlegate restaurant and the 3 golf clubs named below, the CILT Golf Society was able to enjoy yet another splendid autumn tour. This year John proposed a visit to Yorkshire to play Fulford GC, York (Strensall) GC and Ganton GC. In view of the proven quality of all these courses the membership was fully supportive of John’s choice and proved it by turning up in force – 30 people to be precise. Despite having to adhere to the ‘new normal’ Covid-19 restrictions, it was with great anticipation that we turned up at Fulford GC (home of an ash tree by the 17th green from which Bernhard Langer played his shot in the 1981 Benson & Hedges tournament) on Sunday 6th September to learn that it was also Club Championship day. Oh good we thought, the course should be in tip-top condition. And so [...]
