Chairman’s Review of the Year 2021

January 5th, 2022|

Report for 2021.  Apart from our Members’ Meeting, the easing of Covid restrictions enabled us to enjoy a full season of events and attendance levels improved.  We gained some new members so I extend a warm welcome to them all.  One feature this year was the introduction of the World Handicap System (WHS) which, in time, should provide a ‘playing handicap’ which more accurately reflects a golfer’s playing ability and the difficulty of the course being played.  Click the link for a summary of the results of events in 2021 ChairmanReport21AnnexA. General.  A Committee Meeting in November discussed all aspects; full reports will be given to the AGM covering: GS Finances.  Rising prices, higher attendance numbers and our policy to subsidise events from GS funds resulted in a deficit of over £2,000 in 2021.  With the need to keep reserves to cover cash-flow (deposits, delayed sponsor payments), the committee recommended increasing annual subscriptions, event fees for members (with more for guests) and to seek more sponsors.  Committee Appointments. To support our 2022 Captain, Brian Reid, the committee recommended Ian Chalmers to be Vice [...]

Gus and Liz raise over £2000 for Institute of Cancer Research

November 29th, 2021|

After a two years absence due to COVID restrictions, Gus Whyte Sales Director at Hoppecke Industrial Batteries (UK) Ltd, once again dug out his kilt and along with 90 others tackled a number of hills in the lake district raising well needed money for the Institute of Cancer Research (ICR). On a wet and windy day (which is very relevant when wearing a kilt) and on the 5th November the climbs took place around the Coniston area in the Like District National Park. The success of the day was recognised with thanks from the ICR where with generous sponsorship support from members of The CILT Golf Society and from guests at their regular golfing events, colleagues from the UK Materials Handling Industry and personal friends Gus was awarded the Climb of Life medal for the highest value donation collected by an individual. Gus and his wife Liz collected over £2,000.00 and as a group the sponsorship, raffle and charity auction raised over £75,000.00. A valued contribution by the ICR. Gus would like to thank everyone that supported him with this event to [...]

CILT Golf Society – Autumn Meeting and Season Round-Up

November 2nd, 2021|

After a comparatively normal golfing year, the CILT Golf Society held its season-ending Autumn Meeting on 13th October at the very welcoming Northamptonshire County Golf Club. Unseasonably mild late-season weather continued to favour us so 21 members and 4 guests tackled this gem of a Harry S Colt course with eager anticipation. With the course rewarded those players who were able to keep the ball out of trouble off the tee and master the true, but tricky, greens, early optimism dissipated sooner for some than others! As has been the case since we first visited Northamptonshire County in 2014, members and guests were treated to a excellent three-course meal as they came in after their round, followed by prize-giving for the day and award of the trophies that are competed for throughout the season. Joining us for the dinner was CILT Student Member, Shirley Boama, who took advantage of the Forum’s well known networking opportunities to make contact with several prominent logisticians as part of her career development. In his role as ‘keeper-of-the-scores’ Immediate Past Captain, Cameron Grant, announced the day’s winners and [...]

Match Results

September 22nd, 2021|

Over the past few weeks members of our Golf Society have been busy doing battle with various other groups. The results of their endeavours are shown below. Triangular match versus The Royal Logistics Corps GS and Transport GS While the world of logistics is facing many challenges - notably from the global pandemic and the aftermath of Brexit - it is comforting to know that golf can provide a little respite. Our match v the Royal Logistic Corps Golf Society has been played annually since 1996, initially at the RAC Club, Epsom, then at North Hants GC, Fleet, and more recently at the Army GC, Aldershot. It was set up to provide an opportunity for networking and job search for Army personnel nearing the end of their military career in logistics and transport. For a few years it was widened to be a match between 3 teams (including the Freight Transport Association) then, in 2013, it was reorganised into the current format of a match between 3 teams from CILT, the RLC and Transport Golf [...]

Another Amazing Tour

September 21st, 2021|

Whatever the location and regardless of the weather, John Winter always organises a thoroughly enjoyable tour! This year’s three day return trip to Yorkshire proved to be no exception. The tour party of 26 members and six guests, met at Moortown Golf Club – venue for the 1929 Ryder Cup - on Sunday 5th September. Having recently hosted the English Amateur Championship, the course was in tip-top, if somewhat tough, condition. Nevertheless, several players stepped up to the task and managed to play to, or better than, their handicaps.  Among performances of note was that of Brian Reid, who recorded an eagle on the par four, 5th even though he had no idea of the green layout or flag position! After enjoying our first night’s stay in the excellent York Hilton, on Day two we were made very welcome at Immediate Past CILT GS Captain Gus Whyte’s home course, Kirkbymoorside Golf Club. Flat and featureless would not be an accurate description of this course. Challenging, well presented and great fun would be more [...]

A Close Match!

August 8th, 2021|

Hoping to improve upon last year’s tied match, the CILT Golf Society took on the National Liberal Club Golf Circle at Aldwickbury Park Golf Club near Harpenden on Thursday 29th July. The Liberal GC included two ladies in their team for the first time. This was a welcome development in an always enjoyable sporting and social event. Unfortunately only 7 of the selected 8 CILT GS team members were able to attend, so Eddie Cox ended up with the tough task of taking on a Liberal GC pair on his own – in a 4-ball, better ball, Stableford competition! Excellent golfing weather prevailed during the day on a very good course that featured regular changes in elevation and extremely tricky, quick greens. As well as bemoaning 3 (and even 4) putting, the post-match chat was sprinkled with comment about the hedge across the 12th fairway and the ‘invisible’ green on the 13th. Tension mounted as the groups arrived back at the clubhouse and the scores were recorded. The first match was halved and the second match saw CILT [...]
