This is one of our oldest regular events played at our founding venue, Denham Golf Club. It is our annual match for a team of 8 played against the Oil Industry Golf Society. The Golf Society founding captain, John Smith, was a member at Denham Golf Club and of the Oil Industry Golf Society. He arranged this annual match which has been played since 1995 and was originally sponsored by BP. It is played in the morning over 18 holes between the two teams as a 4BBB match and is followed by the famous ‘Denham Carvery Lunch’ set in the Dining Hall surrounded by trophies in this traditional private members’ club. All CILT Golf Society members are eligible to bid for a place in the team.
In 2007 an extra knock out competition was introduced, organised by Paul Butterworth, played in accordance with R&A Rules of Golf for Singles Matchplay Competitions, over 18 holes, off full handicap. The match to be arranged on any course agreed between both players but, if the match is played on the home course of one of the players, that player will concede one extra shot to his / her opponent. The draw for the competition is made at the AGM and all matches are to be completed before The Autumn Meeting.
This meeting was initially arranged in 1995 -96 to coincide with the Institute Annual Conference and was held at the Forest of Arden Course, just days after that course had staged the Murphys English Open. In 1998 the event was moved to Frilford Heath (1998-2003) and then onto Huntercombe (2004-2009) Golf Clubs. After 2 years at The RAC Club in Epsom we are once again travelling to the Midlands to play the famous Copt Heath Golf Club where Martin Elliot and Peter McEvoy are among their alumni. The Golf Club is rated as one of the best in the area, is easily accessible from the M42 and has become a firm favourite for our Golf Society.
