Spring Meeting – Hankley Common Golf Club – 19th August 2020
In 2008 the Golf Society moved its Spring Meeting from Denham Golf Club and has now made Hankley Common Golf Club, near Farnham, the regular venue for this meeting. Support from our regular main sponsor, Narrow Aisle, enables us to offer this top-quality course at a subsidised rate so members are encouraged to keep this date in their diary. Many of us have happy memories of this famous venue, particularly the meeting in 2009 when we were joined by Hamish Ritchie, the then Captain of the Royal & Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews, pictured here with the Golf Society Chairman and the Hankley Captain. After an excellent lunch, he entertained us all with a fascinating talk on life as Captain of the R & A.
This years meeting will include an 18 hole Stableford golf competition, lunch and prize giving. After waht is usually an excellent lunch, there will be an opportunity for those who wish to play more golf. The meeting is sponsored by Flexi Narrow Aisle and their MD, John Maguire, will present the prizes. Apart from the main competition trophy prizes, there will be guest and other prizes.
Hankley Common Golf Club was first opened for play over nine holes in 1897. In 1922 James Braid advised on the addition of a further nine holes. Bobby Locke described the course as the closest resemblance to a seaside links and the famous course architect, Charles Lawrie, once described the course as “one of the best inland layouts in Britain”. The 7th hole is looked upon as being one of the finest par 3s in the country and the magnificent 18th a superb but challenging finishing hole. The course and surrounding area are classified as a ‘Site of Special Scientific Interest’ which includes a number of indigenous trees such as Rowan, Oak and Silver Birch, together with the invading Scots Pine. The course is also home to many birds and animals, including the rare Dartford Warbler, Woodlark, Night Jar, Adder, Deer, Badger and the Sand Lizard. The clubhouse, originally built in 1982, was refurbished and extended in 1999 and now features excellent facilities, including a dining room offering the finest cuisine, a relaxing lounge bar and good quality changing rooms. This being said the fine asset of the club is surely the course itself. Recently voted number 50 in Golf Monthly Top 100 courses and number 74 in Golf World Magazine Top 100 list, this is a course that will never disappoint the visitor.
Hankley Common Golf Club is one of the top rated courses in the country and an Open Qualifying course. The CILT Golf Society is fortunate to have been able to secure a reservation to play at this club and has held its Spring Meeting here each year since 2008. It is our favourite event and an ideal opportunity to bring a guest
